Seasons
Once again,
I am sad, my uncle passed into glory yesterday. Yes, I am happy for his
transition; he no longer suffers in his mortal coil with pain and can hear the
glorious praises of angels without hearing aids. But I am sad for me and for my
aunt and cousins who will feel the loss of his love and humor. What has dawned
on me is that as a culture; we do not want to allow people to be sad. We always
want to make things cheerful, why is that? Why are we so uncomfortable with
sadness?
God created
us with a range of emotions to feel and experience. Yet, we only want to
experience the “nice” emotions; love, joy, happiness and the like. However, in
a bittersweet way we need those lower emotions of sadness, frustration and
anger to help us truly appreciate that when life is, in our opinion, good.
The bible
and the Byrds remind us there is a season for everything.
“There is a time for everything, a
season for every purpose under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a
time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time
to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh. A time to
mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones
together, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to
search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time
to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to
love and time to hate, a time for war and time for peace. Ecclesiastes
3: 1-8
I am
reminded of the story of a little girl telling her mother about helping
someone. She saw a little boy crying while sitting on his porch. He was sad
that he had broken his favorite toy beyond repair, so she helped him. Her mother
inquired how did she help; could she fix the toy? The girl responded, “No
mommy, I helped him cry.”
We need to
be more like that accepting things at face value. We are to have a child-like
faith. We don’t have to understand everything. If I had to understand how the
internet works before I could use it, I would never find all the information or
connect with the many friends that I do. If we can approach the emotional things in
life the same way, I believe we will have a great deal more contentment.
Getting
bogged down in the over analysis of life; steals much of the joy we could
experience. Sometimes the motives of another are not pure but sometimes they
are. However, we could focus instead on our own motives and possibly even bring
good from what was intended for bad. God can bring good from anything. Follow
his example.
I am still
sad but that is okay, I won’t stay sad forever just as I can’t stay happy
forever. Life is a roller coaster ride not a carousel.

ReplyDeleteAt Psalms 90:10 it says that we die and away we fly. The human soul in all it's glory can overcome the limitations of gravity and take us to new heights, but like a caterpillar we must die before we experience new life.
