Confused?

I believe that there is confusion in the world today about the fact there is a difference between opinion and judgement.  Stating one’s opinion these days can put one in hot water pretty fast. There are also a great many people who are quick to take offense where none was intended.  Before we jump to conclusions as to who in our lives these statements apply to, we must consider how they apply to us.  It does feel as though Christianity is under attack; we are the culture de jour of contempt. This is not new; Christianity has been under attack since its inception.  It has been an ongoing battle that we have taken for granted in America. Citizens of Asian and Arab nations have had to fight and sacrifice everything to claim the love of Christ.
We claim the love of Christ but do we demonstrate it? Do we voice our opinions with love or do we pass judgement?  A sure fire way to determine the difference is to determine if we have administered a consequence; passing judgment is typically accompanied by a consequence, just as judge passes a sentence.  Are we withholding something from someone else, like our love and care? As Christians, our actions should be consistent and Christ-like.  This is not to say we have to agree with everyone and every new idea. We do need to act purposefully with love and not react with anger. Consider our approach to objectionable situations, how can we best make our position known without sacrificing Christian integrity.
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Proverbs 15:1.  We must not allow ourselves to be goaded into harshness. Yes, there is such a thing as righteous anger; we must be confident that righteousness is truly on our side. “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.” James 1:19, 20.

  1. 1 Peter 3:15 says: "But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. Centerfielder Carlos Gomez was thrown out of Monday's game versus the Giants. He wasn't arguing with the umpire, but his reaction to being called out on a close play showed no gentleness or respect for the people in attendance.
